Obituary for
Chester G. Betts
Chester G. Betts “Chet”, 93, the beloved son of the late Alice Jarvis-Betts and William Betts was born on November 28th, 1924 in Brighton, Massachusetts. He departed this life on Saturday February 10th, 2018.
Chet received his formal education from Cambridge Public Schools. He was first employed by Albany Carpet and later by the City of Cambridge Public Works Water Department until he retired in 1994. He was a founder and lifelong member of the Ebony Club until its closing. In 1947 he married Eleanor Mae Springer and from their union they had three children: Renee L. Betts, Chester R. Betts, and the late Valerie A. Betts. Chet was raised in a part of Cambridge known as the “Coast”. Everyone in the city knew him, both young and old. Everywhere he went people would call out “Hey Chet” or “Hello Mr. B”.
He and his wife Eleanor loved to entertain at their home, inside the house during the cold months and in the backyard during the warmer months. Who doesn’t remember the amazing cookouts in the backyard on Prince Street? From sun up to sun down the songs, dancing and laughter filled the air. Chet loved to travel with his family. He could build almost anything with his hands. He made custom doll houses, grills, tables, he would lay carpet and could make anything old look new. Chet loved all of his family especially his grand and great-grand children. His face lit up when they walked into the room. Slot machines were one of his favorite pass times. It was no surprise to walk in the corner store and see Chet watching the Keno board. He spoke his mind, had a great sense of humor and a huge heart.
Chet was predeceased by his wife Eleanor, his parents; William and Alice, his daughter Valerie, Brothers and sisters; James Alden, June, Robert, Gardner, Barbara, Roberta, Malcolm & Melvin. He leaves to share his fond memories with his daughter Renee Betts and son in law Tyrone Robinson and son and daughter in law Chester and Debra Betts. Grandchildren; Glen, Lance, Artico, Valerie, Andre, Laura, Tasheena, Chyna, Great-Grandchildren; Felicia, Nubian, Nature, Renee, Andre Jr., Christianaelle, Tiffany, Ayden, Celeste & Rylee. His best buddy Al Ford along with a host of niece, nephews, relatives and friends.
Dad we will always love you,
Rest in eternal peace
