Obituary for Roland E. Houle, MD

Roland E. Houle, MD
Houle, M.D., Roland E. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, formerly of Quincy, Massachusetts, May 16, 2018. Devoted son of the late Ingrid (Gust) Houle and Roland E. Houle. Loving cousin of Marianne Haroian of Worcester, MA, Victor Gust of Naples, FL, Arlene Strah of Norton Shores, MI, Marjorie Reyer of Hermitage, PA and Martha Tomashek of Winona, MN. A funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Paul’s Church, Bow and Arrow Streets, Cambridge, Tuesday, May 22nd at 10 AM. Please go directly to church. Services will conclude with burial at Knollwood Cemetery, Canton.

Roland was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and lived during his youth in Worcester, MA. Roland was a 1956 graduate of Holy Cross College and 1960 graduate of Harvard Medical School. He did his residency at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary and later both practiced and taught at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. Roland served in the US Army in Vietnam as an eye surgeon under perilous conditions and received the Bronze Star for his service. Following his military service Roland practiced ophthalmological surgery for many years in the Boston area.

Among the countless patients Roland cared for over his many years of private practice, one patient signed a baseball and gave it to him with the inscription, “To my favorite eye Doctor, Dr. Roland Houle, All good wishes, Dom Dimaggio”.

Although lauded by many prominent patients, one of Roland’s greatest joys came from his medical service to the poor of the Philippines where for nearly 20 years he brought sight to many cataract patients through his work with Restoring Sight International.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 West Jackson Boulevard, Chicago IL 60607.
