Obituary for Norma E. Smith

Norma E. Smith, 95, of Belmont, MA., died peacefully at her home on June 10, 2018, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. Born in Arlington, MA., to John and Ernestine Smith, a movie buff, she was named after Norma Shearer, the leading Hollywood star of the period. Norma Smith would become a star in her own right as an honors graduate of Arlington High School and Salem Teachers College (now Salem State University) who would go on to get a master’s degree at Boston University and begin a long and distinguished career as an influential and admired high school teacher, eventually retiring from the Billerica school system. Norma loved to travel and was an avid reader and serious follower of world and political events. She also had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to gather family and friends to play cards and board games for hours on end. She was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox. But perhaps most important to Norma was her Catholic faith and her quiet and generous support for the blind and handicapped. She had many friends who loved her. Norma will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Phyllis Featherston of Norwalk, CT, and Jean MacKenzie of Sudbury, MA., eight nieces and nephews and many cousins. Funeral from the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., Arlington on Thursday at 10 am. Funeral mass in Saint Agnes' Church, Arlington at 11:30 am. Relatives are invited. Visitation in the funeral home from 10-11 am. Burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington. To send an online condolence visit www.keefefuneralhome.com.
