Meyer, Michael Callan

Died at the age of 72 on August 24, 2018 at Mass. General Hospital [Boston, Massachusetts]. He was the son of Dr. Julius Meyer, who died in 1973, and Mary Louise Meyer (nee Knoernschild), who died in 2013. He is survived by five siblings – Margaret, John, Mary (Larry) Bannister, Peter (Cynthia), and Kathleen (Brian Becker) Meyer. His brother Frank died in 2014. He had four nephews and nieces (James, Joseph, Julie, Kate).

Mike grew up in the Milwaukee parish of Christ King. He graduated from Marquette University High School in 1964 where he lettered in swimming all four years. His senior year, he was the starting quarterback of their 1963 Conference Champion team. He loved his summers staying with his grandmother in the cottage her family built on Booth Lake near East Troy [Wisconsin].

He spent six years in the Jesuits, first at St. Bonifacious in Minnesota, then St. Louis University where he got a BA in philosophy. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1984 from Boston University. He taught philosophy for 40 years at Northeastern and UMass, Boston, where he was a respected colleague, teacher and mentor. At NU he was the department undergraduate advisor and program director for three decades.

He was a Packers fan dating from the Lombardi era, and now a Patriots fan. He performed and choreographed Modern Dance for various Boston companies in the 70s and 80s. He loved his nearby MFA, the Symphony and the Arts in general in the Boston area. But his major love remained teaching philosophy, which he did until several weeks before he died.
