Obituary for Michael F. Gebhart

Gebhart, Michael F., 84, of Cambridge, passed away at home on October 23, 2018. Michael was an independent international design and planning consultant in Cambridge; his most significant projects were in Kuwait. He was formerly a vice president at The Architects Collaborative in Cambridge. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and received a master’s degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was an active member of the Boston Society of Architects and a Fellow in the College of Fellows, American Institute of Architects, an honor of which he was deeply proud. Michael had a sparkling personality, irrepressible sense of humor, and boundless optimism that will be missed by all who knew him. His drawings and sketches—some formal, some on paper napkins—have been admired and emulated by many. Michael was also an avid sports fan who followed many teams, from college to professional, and a dedicated, though not always successful, fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jane (Hensel) Gebhart; beloved children Christopher M. Gebhart & wife Danielle of Denver, CO; Jonathan M. Gebhart of Cambridge, MA; Lisa Gebhart Scintilla & husband Nick of King of Prussia, PA; Michael J. Gebhart of Brookhaven, PA; & 2 cherished grandchildren. Private burial will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery. A celebration of Michael’s life is planned for spring 2019. Contributions in his name may be made to the BSA Foundation https://www.architects.org/foundation/give or the Ralph Rapson Traveling Study Fellowship https://www.aia-mn.org/resources/mn-architectural-foundation/donate-now/.
