Obituary for Diana K. Miller (Rosen)

MILLER, Diana K. (Rosen), of Cambridge and Truro died peacefully on December 17, 2018. Diana was born on July 27, 1924 in New York City where she attended Manhattan's first progressive school, the Little Red Schoolhouse, and The High School of Music and Art. She completed high school at the International School in Geneva. Diana later attended the Sorbonne where she studied under the celebrated Russian-born sculptor Ossip Zadkine.

Diana continued her studies at Sarah Lawrence College where she met and married John F. Miller, who was studying under the GI Bill. What followed were four children by the age of 29 (one boy and three girls) and a nomadic multi-state/province odyssey that would define her marriage. John was a university librarian and the Millers’ peripatetic academic existence brought them to Yale, Harvard, Amherst, and Dalhousie Universities. Diana continued her studies as time allowed and in Amherst, counted renowned painter Cuck Close among her professors. She also proved a dab hand at ceramics.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia Diana trained as a teacher and taught high school students. Following a divorce, she re-established herself as a professional working mom in Cambridge with three of her four children still in tow. Initially she worked with her father at the Mandrake Bookstore which he had owned since 1956. Eventually, Diana put her artist’s eye, writing skills, and abundance of articulate charm to work as a publicist for well-known architectural and engineering firms in the Greater Boston Area.

Diana is survived by her son Christopher and his wife Vivian of Long Beach, CA; her daughter Jessica and her husband Robert Birnbaum of Cambridge, MA; her daughter Elizabeth of London, England and her daughter Rosanna Patterson of Waltham, MA. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Brendan, Jarrod, Christine Tyler and Rori; and one great grand daughter Alana. Diana was predeceased by her granddaughter Kristin Haley Patterson in September, 2018.

A Graveside Memorial Service for Diana and Kristin will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at the Cambridge Cemetery, 76 Coolidge Avenue, Cambridge, MA at 11am. Relatives and Friends are kindly invited and asked to gather inside the main gate of the Cemetery.
