My heartfelt condolences to Richard's family and all those privileged to have known him and shared some precious time with him. Richard, my "radical Christian-Catholic friend", I miss him so. He came into my life by sharing a taxi from the O'Hare Airport in Chicago to the North Shore Campus of Loyola for an NCAN annual conference. Every-time he reminded me of that historic encounter we laughed with gratitude. Once I left my involvement with PLWA, I no longer attended the NCAN meetings, but Richard kept me informed about the conferences and many issues that were important in his life so I received emails from him about the CTA conferences, experiences at SOA, Fort Benning, articles from the NCR and the Boston Globe, etc. I once told him I was certain he was on the FBI Watch-list and feared that put me in jeopardy also. Another cause for shared laughter. Certainly, as others have commented, Richard had a great sense of humor and never focused on his own sufferings. He was a loyal friend and family support. My life was really enriched by his friendship. I prayed for him every day for years and offer my prayers for all others who loved him. Richard, just have the table set and the party ready for the rest of us! Sr. Frances

It is with great personal sadness that I have just learned of the death of our dear Richard, while yet knowing that he is now enjoying the happiness of his special presence with God. Each year, a large number of us looked forward to our gathering at Loyola in Chicago for the National Catholic AIDS Network conference, where we renewed friendships bonded by dedication to ministry with our brothers and sisters living with HIV/AIDS. Richard, our gentle, loving gianat, had the great gifts of hospitality, kindness,laughter, sensitivity to the needs of others, and generosity in reaching out to others. That memory will remain with us as we now ask his continued prayers for all of us. May God's peace be with his family and all of us who love and miss him. May we all one day be reunited in the arms of our loving God!.

Richard was a very special friend to me at a time of transition in my life and he shared with me, as he did with so many others, his love, caring, humor, intelligence and joi de vivre. To be a guest in his home was to enjoy his wonderful paintings and other objects from around the world, a drink (always Jameson), reminiscences about so many friends and great food - spicy and in large quanities! I particularly remember his devoted attention to his mother as she reached the end of her life. He reached the end of his far too early but left a legacy of leaving all of us who knew him the better for his being part of our lives. My deepest sympathy to all of his family.

Richard was a good friend and colleague. He was the one person we all talked to when we were feeling down. And he was one of the funniest people I ever knew. He once convinced some students that there is volcanic activity in Boston harbor; only later did they realize it was low tide that exposed some islands. I helped Richard set up several flower shows, and we had great fun doing that. Richard also socialized with my lab group at our frequent dinner forays around Boston, and he fit perfectly our crazy group. His passing is our loss, and I doubt that we will see another with his wit, humor, intellect, and sage advice.

To Dear Richard's Family, We are very saddened to hear of Richard's death. We offer our deepest sympathy to you in your loss of a very special man. There was no person more kind and compassionate than Richard. We had many occasions to experience these exceptional qualities through the years. When my husband. Bill. was in a serious auto accident in 2000, it was Richard who came immediately to the hospital. There is no question that Richard is in heaven with Joe. Joe helped us many years ago when our daughter had a serious horse injury. He referred us to the right Doctor at Childrens' Hospital, where Dr. Upton saved our daughter's lower leg. We sat with Richard at Veronique Latimer's wedding, which is the last time we saw Richard. It was so good to catch up. Many years ago, it was Michele Latimer who introduced us to Richard and Joe. It was our good fortune ever since to have such a fine friend. Our prayers are with you and with Richard. Unfortunately, we are unable to attend services. We are in the midst of helping our daughter and two year old grandson get through a series of corrective surgeries for this old ankle-foot injurty with the very same Doctor Joe recommended years ago. I wrote to Richard at Christmas that Joe is still with us. Our sincerest sympathy, Lucy and Bill Buckley

Richard and my wife and I were colleagues and close friends at SUNY-Cobleskill.We were all in the Plant Science Dept. In fact, I was chairman of the search committee that hired Rich. I had grown up in Winchester so my first question to him in the interview was,"how many cookies did Andrew eat?" and he immediately responded "Andrew ate 8000" the rest of the committee looked at us like we were from another planet but of course anyone who grew up in the Boston area in the 50's would know the Albany Carpet Cleaners jingle. He was fine teacher and much liked by all the other faculty. We were especially close and he spent a lot of time at our house when he didn't trek back to Boston on weekends. He is godfather to our son who was also born on March 17. When my mother died Rich immediately came to my father's house and helped out ferrying people to and from the airport. We never talked politics because we didn't agree on much but we were still best of friends. I can still see him outside leading a Woody Plant ID lab around campus, his long legs eating up ground as the students strung out behind virtually jogging to keep up. Those were the post San Luis Obispo years when he still wore that dumb cowboy hat and had a tin of chewing tobacco in his back pocket. He was a wonderful human being and lots of fun to be with. I was very saddened to hear of Richard's death. While I have not seen him for quite a while, I never forgot him and what a wonderful, warm, and caring person he was. I knew him as "the plant guy" from my patients that he worked with. He brought a lot of happy moments to those patients lives-many of whom did not have many happy moments in their lives. It was always a pleasure to see him and interact with him and I felt as if I had known him for years. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

A kinder, gentler, more caring person would be hard to find. Richard's appearance & personality were larger than life. His dedicated compassion toward those in need & the suffering would inspire even the most hardened individuals. He was always a calming presence at meetings, & when a "peace-keeper" was needed he seemed to know how to bring opposing sides together. Hopefully the example he set for others will drive others to follow his example.

I was honored to consider Richard my brother-in-law and friend.My brother Joseph and Richard shared a very special love that few couples ever experience. Before Joseph died, he told me that he was not afraid of death, but rather how my Mom, Richard, and I would cope. I lost my mother nine months later, but Richard and I had one another to share our tears and laughter. Joseph gave me memories that I will always treasure, but he gave me something even more special. He gave me Richard, whom I grew to love as if he were my own brother. Although I miss him so much, I know Richard is now with Joseph, and they will be together for eternity.
